It is commonly accepted that most cities are currently at a stage of transition, especially cities with a strong industrial past; this means that they have to renew and reinvigorate their financial basis by investing in creative sectors. Eleusis chooses to invest in culture, because Eleusis is culture. We want to - and we must - create, even in these times of economic crisis, an attractive environment, so that the younger generations (which are currently closer to intensive learning) can discover incentives and reasons that will keep them in the city.

The first edition of the Report was presented in Matera in July 2020.The purpose of this Monitoring Report is to present and systematise the most important data gathered during the year of Matera European Capital of Culture 2019.
An Appendix has been added to this second edition of the Report that presents the data relating to the short-term economic impacts that have emerged from the evaluation studies that were concluded during 2020. This has offered a useful opportunity to expand the International Dimension and Cultural Vibrancy sections with new paragraphs, and to correct some typographical errors that appeared in the first edition.

Exactly one year remaining, as the European Capital of Culture Esch2022 will officially open in February 2022. For this unique occasion, the
southern Luxembourg city of Esch-Alzette has joined forces with 10 neighbouring municipalities in Luxembourg and the 8 municipalities in the
French border region forming the ‘Communauté de Communes Pays Haut Val d’Alzette’ (CCPHVA). Over the course of nearly a year, this region, whose history has been shaped by ore mining, will showcase its social and cultural diversity through around 140 projects. Together with its project partners and supporters, the Esch2022 project team presented the programme of events during a digital press day.
