Bid book Spain English
San Sebastian, the city behind this bid, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the Basque Government all face an important collective challenge in the coming years: to achieve peace and create a model of coexistence that we can share with other European cities. This model will be based on respect for Human Rights, the culture of peace, education in values and linguistic and cultural diversity; all factors that enrich the citizen construction of Europe and provide it with a clear identity.

The paper analyses the culture-led economic regeneration of Pécs, the Hungarian city which has been awarded the title of European Capital of Culture (ECoC) in 2010. The aim is to shed light on its social and economic development over the past twenty-five years, by considering the culture-oriented transformation as implemented within the city and the role played by the project.

Residents tend to have high expectations about the benefits of hosting a mega-event. So, it was not surprising that the nomination of Guimarães, Portugal, as the 2012 European Capital of Culture (2012 ECOC) had raised great expectations in the local community towards its socio- economic and cultural benefits. The present research was designed to examine the Guimarães residents’ perceptions on the impacts of hosting the 2012 ECOC approached in two different time schedules, the pre- and the post-event, trying to capture the evolution of the residents` evaluation of its impacts. For getting the data, two surveys were applied to Guimarães` residents, one in the pre-event phase, in 2011, and another in the post-event phase, in 2013. This approach is uncommonly applied to Portugal data and it is even the first time it was done to a Portuguese European Capital of Culture. After a factor analysis, the results of t-tests indicate that there were significant differences (p<0.05) between the samples from the pre- and post- 2012 ECOC on two positive impact factors (Community’ benefits and Residents’ benefits) and one negative impact factor (Economic, social and environmental costs). Respondents also showed a negative perception of the impacts in all dimensions, except Changes in habits of Guimarães residents.

Report English
This report sets out the findings of an ex post evaluation of the European Capitals of Culture (ECoC) action in 2013, focussing on the two cities hosting the title, Košice in Slovakia and the Marseille-Provence area in France. The evaluation explores the implementation of both ECoC throughout their ‘life-cycle’ i.e. from the preparation of applications, through the selection and designation process, to the development and completion of cultural programmes and supporting activities. This summary considers the impacts of hosting the title for the two cities, before a comparative review sets out the conclusions emerging from Košice and Marseille-Provence and their implications for the relevance, efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of the ECoC action as a whole.
Report France English
What you hold between your hands may appear to be a dry official report, but in fact it is a vibrant account of a veritable saga: the story of how over the past 10 years, the Bouches-du-Rhône territory mobilised itself and produced a once-in-a-lifetime cultural event. A cultural event that was powerful and original, that was founded upon the deep desire to give the world a new vision of Marseille and its metropolitan area.

This thesis compares the Swedish cities of Lund’s Meaningful Meetings and Umeå’s Curiosity and Passion - The Art of Co-Creation applications to be named European Capital of Culture (ECOC) 2014. The applications focus on two criteria of the EU, European Dimension and City and Citizens. The way the two bids worked with the criteria will reveal the process of Europeanisation – the process of creating common meaning and collective understandings of Europe. Interviews with cultural professionals that worked on the applications, two of the actors and a member of the selection panel were interviewed. By doing a discourse analysis of the material, reoccurring topics that are used to build the Europeanisation will be visible. The analysis will focus on two terms used by Monica Sassatelli in her research of ECOC: reconceptualisation and regeneration of space. The Europeanisation was then conceptualised with the help of Thomas Risse’s three models of identity formation: Blended identities, nested identities and zero-sum identity.
